Federal: Save With a Tax Credit
The same U.S. Federal Credit applies to every new system installation at a flat 30% of the full system price after installation, with no upper limit. Solar Community will provide you with the document necessary to add to your tax forms. The discount comes for you as a tax credit. All applicable photovoltaic systems must provide electricity for the residence and must meet applicable fire and electrical code requirements. State: Maryland Clean Energy Grant Program
Maryland's Residential Clean Energy Grant Program, administered by the Maryland Energy Administration (MEA), provides financial incentives to homeowners that install solar water-heating systems or solar-electric (PV) systems. Both grid-connected and off-grid PV systems are eligible for support. The current Maryland Solar Energy Grant Program provides the lesser of $500 or 20% of the installed cost for solar hot water heating, and $1,000 per system/household for systems of less than 20 kW for residential solar PV.
State: Maryland Clean Energy Production Tax Credit
Maryland offers a production tax credit for electricity generated by wind, geothermal energy, solar energy, hydropower, hydrokinetic, municipal solid waste and biomass resources. An individual or corporation that applies for and receives certification from the Maryland Energy Administration (MEA) may claim a credit equal to 0.85 cents per kilowatt-hour ($0.0085/kWh) against the state income tax, for a five-year period, for electricity generated by eligible resources. The credit for electricity generated by co-firing is 0.5 cents per kilowatt-hour ($0.005/kWh).
Local: Baltimore County - Property Tax Credit for Solar and Geothermal Devices
The state of Maryland permits local governments to offer property tax credits for energy conservation devices if they choose to do so. In November 2010 Baltimore County enacted legislation offering property tax credits for solar and geothermal energy conservation devices installed in residential buildings. The amount of the property tax credit is set at the lesser of 50% of the cost of the system or $5,000 for heating devices and $1,500 for devices which supply hot water. The authorizing legislation does not specify the maximum credit for devices which generate electricity (i.e., photovoltaic systems) or which provide energy for cooling needs. Applications must be filed on or before June 1 of the year immediately preceding the first taxable year for which the property tax credit is sought.
Local: Property Tax Credit
Local incentives are changing all the time as counties become more aware of the benefits of solar power or run out of funds. If your property taxes are lower than the credit amount in a year, you can carry the remaining credit forward so you always get the full amount.
